*Granville State Forest*:
Directions and Activities
From the center of Granville, take Route 57 west about 5 miles.
Turn on
West Hartland Road (you'll see a sign for the state forest). Turn left
and proceed about 1 mile into the forest. You can park next to the new
bridge. There are many trails in the forest (see the map on the MA DCR
website), but the jewel is the trail along Hubbard River. From the
parking area, head downriver, along a now-discontinued asphalt road.
(This used to lead to a small camping area). At the end of the loop, you
will see a trail on your left. Follow this...it goes about 2.5 miles
(don't take the gas line). Depending on how far you go, you may
encounter an old steam pipe, once part of one of the small manufacturing
mills on the river in the 1800s. According to one history, portions of
this trail were once part of a stage road connecting Albany and Hartford.

*Lookout at the Phelon-Holden Rice Memorial Forest*, Owned
and Managed
by New England Forestry Foundation
From Route 57, take North Lane. Proceed about 1/2 mile. You will see a
small pull off and a trail/grassy wood road on the right. Follow this to
the summit and get ready for a treat. Take note of the impressive birch
on your way up the trail. For information and maps about the
