Lawrence Swamp

LAWRENCE SWAMP, South Amherst, MA: This 1,000 acre wetland includes a complex of habitat types (forested swamp, shrub swamp, open marsh, vernal pools) and provides habitat to a high diversity of plants and animals. Much of the land has been protected as part of the Lawrence Swamp Aquifer Protection plan as well as for conservation purposes. There are lots of recreational opportunities, the most popular of which is the bike path.

Directions: One of the simplest access points into the Swamp is the bike path, which crosses Station Road. From Route 9 in Amherst, take Southeast Street to Station Road. The Caroline Arnold trail can be accessed here and has a nice bird blind overlooking a marsh. The Robert Frost trail cuts across the Lawrence Swamp, but flooding is an issue.
